Learn More About Monitoring Your Blood Glucose Levels

You will have to work with your doctor to come up with a testing schedule and determine your normal blood sugar levels.

Your doctor may recommend testing before meals, after meals, before bed and/or other times throughout the day or night. You may be required to take a fasting blood sugar test after waking up and before eating anything.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies a typical blood sugar target before a meal as 80 to 130 mg/dl and two hours after starting a meal as less than 180 mg/dl. However, target glucose blood levels will vary from person to person depending on their type of diabetes, age, lifestyle and other factors.

When and how often you test will depend on a number of factors, including but not limited to:

  • How often you use insulin.
  • The type of diabetes you have.
  • Medications you are taking.

Your doctor will also be able to tell you what to do if you have too low or too high glucose levels in a blood test.
