Even though insulin is an effective treatment for type 2 diabetes, there are other options.
Oral hypoglycemic drugs do not need to be injected, but they still help manage T2D. A few of these drugs include:
- Metformin and other biguanides. These medications focus on controlling your blood sugar by keeping your liver from making too much glucose.
- Glyburide and other sulfonylureas. These drugs help your pancreas produce insulin, making it easier for your cells to process glucose.
- Meglitinides. These work similarly to sulfonylureas, but they take effect more quickly and the effects wear off faster.
- DPP-IV inhibitors. These are more recent drugs that help lower your blood sugar but do not act as effectively as other drugs.
There are many other options for those with type 2 diabetes. Be sure to talk to an endocrinologist if you have in-depth questions about these medications.
