Learn All You Need About the Three Stimulus Checks

The third stimulus payment is likely to be the last round, as the country receives vaccines and boosters to fend off severe consequences of COVID-19. But it is not too late to claim your checks if you are still waiting for a check or bank deposit.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reviews taxpayers’ information to determine eligibility and payment amount for the first and second payments. However, non-filers and individuals that experienced a qualifying change in 2020 may have missed some or all of their payments. Check out more details on all three stimulus checks.

Perhaps you are still waiting on your payments from 2020, or you are starting to wonder, “Where can I get my stimulus check?” While most people do not need to do anything to receive their stimulus check, some qualified households will need to claim stimulus funds through their taxes.

Unlike the first stimulus, new requirements for the second and third stimulus checks stop government representatives from checking your previous tax filing if you did not file previous years. This means the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may not send you:

  • A second payment if it has not processed your 2019 return yet.
  • A third payment if it has not processed your 2020 return yet.

The IRS uses your previous tax filings to look at your income, the number of dependents, and the method to send payment. Outdated information could influence your payment, such as changing your banking information or address.

Similarly, your income or number of dependents could have changed since you last filed your taxes.  For example, you may now qualify for the Advanced Child Tax Credit if you had a new dependent in 2020 or 2021.

You can claim the first and second payments when filing your 2020 tax return. You can only claim the third payment with your 2021 return.

However, you may not need to file your taxes if you do not normally. If your income is too low, you can claim all three using the Non-filer Sign-up Tool on the IRS website. Although the deadline for 2020 tax returns was October 15, 2021, the IRS will have a penalty if you do not owe taxes.

You can set up an account to review the status of your latest payment. You should also be able to find details about your payment amount.
