Learn What Android Version Is Running Now
Understanding Android Versions and How to Find Your Current Version
Android is the operating system that powers billions of smartphones and tablets worldwide. Just like your computer runs Windows or macOS, your mobile device runs Android. Google releases new versions of Android regularly, typically once per year, and each version receives a name along with a number. Understanding which version you're running helps you know what features are available on your device and whether your phone can use certain applications.

Android versions have used several naming conventions over the years. From 2009 to 2019, Google named Android versions after desserts in alphabetical order—Android 4.4 KitKat, Android 5.0 Lollipop, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Android 7.0 Nougat, Android 8.0 Oreo, Android 9.0 Pie, and Android 10.0 Q. Starting in 2020, Google switched to a simpler numbering system. Android 11, Android 12, Android 13, Android 14, and Android 15 followed this new approach. As of 2024, Android 14 and Android 15 are among the most recent versions in use.
Each Android version includes different features, security improvements, and performance enhancements. For example, Android 14 introduced better privacy controls and notification management features. Android 13 improved tablet and foldable phone support. Knowing your Android version helps you understand what capabilities your device has and what limitations you might encounter when using newer applications.
Your Android version differs from your device model. For instance, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, OnePlus, and Motorola devices all use Android, but they run different versions depending on when they were manufactured and whether manufacturers have released updates. Two phones of the same model might run different Android versions if one owner has updated their device and the other hasn't.
Practical Takeaway: Your Android version determines which features and security protections your phone has. Learning your version helps you understand your device's capabilities and troubleshoot compatibility issues with apps.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Finding Your Android Version
Finding your Android version takes only a few minutes and requires no special tools. The process is straightforward and works on virtually all Android devices, though the exact steps may vary slightly depending on your phone's manufacturer.

The most common method is to access your device's Settings application. Start by unlocking your phone and locating the Settings app, which typically appears as a gear icon on your home screen or in your app drawer. Tap the Settings icon to open the application. Once Settings opens, scroll down until you find an option labeled "About phone" or "About device." This option is usually near the bottom of the Settings menu. Tap this option to open detailed information about your device.
Within the About Phone section, you'll see various pieces of information about your device, including the manufacturer, model number, and Android version. Look for the line that says "Android version" or "OS version." The number next to this line shows exactly which Android version your device is running. You may also see a "Build number" field, which provides additional technical details about your specific system build.
Some manufacturers customize their version of Android and display this information slightly differently. Samsung devices label this section as "About phone" and may show the Android version prominently at the top. Google Pixel devices also use "About phone" but display the version information in the same location. OnePlus, Motorola, and other manufacturers follow similar patterns, though menu names may differ slightly.
If you have trouble finding the About Phone section, you can use your device's search function within Settings. Most Android phones allow you to search within the Settings app—look for a magnifying glass icon or search bar at the top of the Settings menu. Type "Android version" into the search box, and the system will take you directly to the correct location.
Practical Takeaway: Access Settings, find About Phone or About Device near the bottom, and look for the Android version number. This takes under two minutes and requires only your phone and no additional tools.
What Different Android Versions Mean for Your Device
Android versions span from the earliest iterations in 2008 through current releases in 2024. Understanding where your version falls on this timeline helps explain what your device can and cannot do. Devices running Android 5.0 or earlier (released in 2014 and before) are considered quite outdated, though some still function for basic tasks. Most modern phones run Android 11 through Android 15, released between 2020 and 2024.

Older Android versions, such as Android 8.0 and earlier, lack many security features present in newer versions. These versions receive fewer security updates from manufacturers, leaving devices more vulnerable to potential threats. Many modern applications also no longer support these older versions, meaning users cannot install popular apps from the Google Play Store. Banks, social media platforms, and other services frequently require newer Android versions for their applications to function properly.
Mid-range Android versions like Android 10 through Android 12 offer a good balance of features and compatibility. Devices running these versions can access most modern applications and receive regular security updates from manufacturers. These versions include substantial privacy improvements and better power management compared to older Android releases. Many devices manufactured between 2019 and 2022 run these versions.
Current Android versions—Android 13, 14, and 15—include the latest features and security protections. These versions offer improved privacy controls, better notification management, enhanced tablet support, and stronger protection against malware. Devices running current versions receive the most frequent security updates. However, not all devices can run the newest versions due to hardware limitations or manufacturer choices not to release updates for older models.
Your specific device's Android version depends on three factors: when the device was manufactured, what version it shipped with, and whether the manufacturer has released updates. A phone manufactured in 2022 might ship with Android 12 but could receive updates to Android 13 or 14 depending on the manufacturer's support policy.
Practical Takeaway: Newer Android versions offer better security and more features, but even mid-range versions from a few years ago can perform well for everyday use. Your version determines what apps you can install and how protected your device is.
Checking for Android Updates on Your Device
After discovering your current Android version, you may want to check whether newer versions are available. Manufacturers typically notify users when updates are ready, but you can also check manually. This process varies depending on your device manufacturer, but the basic steps remain consistent across most Android phones.

To check for updates, open Settings and scroll to the bottom of the menu. Look for an option labeled "About phone," "About device," or "System." Inside this section, you'll typically find a button or option that says "Check for updates," "System updates," or "Software updates." Tap this option, and your device will connect to your manufacturer's servers to determine whether any updates are available for your specific model.
If an update is available, your device will display information about the update, including the new Android version number and a description of improvements included in the update. The system will ask whether you want to install the update. If you choose to proceed, your device will need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network and have adequate battery charge (usually at least 50%) before beginning the update process.
The update installation process typically takes 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the update size and your device's speed. During this time, your phone will restart multiple times, and you'll see an Android logo or loading screen. Your phone will be unusable during the update, so plan accordingly. Do not turn off your device or remove the battery during an update, as this can cause serious problems.
Not all devices receive updates to the newest Android version. Device manufacturers typically support their phones for two to three years of major Android updates. A device released in 2021 might receive updates through 2023 or 2024, but older devices may not be eligible for the latest Android versions. This is determined by hardware compatibility and manufacturer support policies, not by any action on your part.
Practical Takeaway: Check for updates regularly through Settings, but understand that older devices may not receive the newest Android versions regardless of how frequently you check.
