Learn How to Find Graves in Cemeteries

Understanding Cemetery Layout and Organization

Most cemeteries follow organized systems to keep track of burial locations. When you arrive at a cemetery, you'll find that graves are typically arranged in sections, blocks, or lots. Each area has a specific name or number, much like neighborhoods in a city. Understanding this layout is the first step in locating a grave.

Cemetery sections often follow alphabetical order, numerical sequences, or are named after saints, flowers, or geographic features. For example, a cemetery might have sections called "Rose Garden," "Oak Hill," or simply "Section A, B, C." Within each section, graves are arranged in rows, and each individual grave has a lot number. Think of it like a street address—knowing the section and lot number helps narrow down exactly where to look.

Many cemeteries also organize burial areas by type. Some sections are reserved for children, others for military veterans, and some for specific religious denominations. Understanding these divisions helps you search more efficiently. For instance, if you're looking for a veteran's grave, you might go directly to the military section rather than searching the entire cemetery.

The office or administration building at the cemetery entrance is your best starting point. Staff members maintain detailed records of every burial and can provide you with a map showing section locations. They can also give you directions and sometimes even walk you through the process. Cemetery staff are accustomed to helping visitors and consider it part of their job.

Practical takeaway: Before walking through the cemetery, stop at the office and ask for a map. Request the section number and lot location for the grave you're seeking. This single step can save you considerable time and effort.

Using Cemetery Records and Documentation

Cemetery records form the backbone of grave location research. These documents contain crucial information: the deceased's full name, date of burial, lot number, section designation, and sometimes additional details like the cemetery plot plan. Understanding what information is available and how to request it makes the search process much more straightforward.

Most cemeteries maintain records in both paper and digital formats. You can typically contact the cemetery office by phone, email, or in person to request specific grave location information. When you contact them, provide as much information as you have: the person's full name, approximate date of death, and any other identifying details. Cemetery staff can cross-reference this information against their databases to locate the grave.

Many cemeteries now offer online searchable databases on their websites. You can type in a name and view results showing section numbers, lot numbers, and sometimes even GPS coordinates. This technology has made grave location significantly more accessible. However, not all cemeteries have adopted online systems, particularly smaller or rural cemeteries, so phone contact may still be necessary.

Documentation you should gather includes any existing records: death certificates, funeral home paperwork, obituaries, or family records. These documents often mention the cemetery name and sometimes include specific plot information. A death certificate, in particular, typically lists the cemetery where the person was buried. You can obtain death certificates from the state vital records office or sometimes from the cemetery itself.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting, gather what information you have about the deceased and contact the cemetery office directly. Ask them to provide the exact section and lot number, or check if they have an online database you can search from home.

Visiting the Cemetery: What to Bring and Prepare

Proper preparation makes a cemetery visit more productive and respectful. Before you go, gather specific information and supplies that will help you locate the grave and document your visit. Planning ahead prevents frustration and wasted time searching without direction.

Start by obtaining a cemetery map if possible. Many cemeteries provide these free of charge, either in person or by mail. If you've already received lot and section information from cemetery staff, write these details down clearly. Bring this information with you on your visit. A notebook and pen are helpful for recording any observations or additional details you notice. If you plan to make a rubbing of the headstone or take photographs, bring appropriate supplies: paper, crayons or graphite, and a camera or smartphone.

Consider the practical aspects of your visit. Cemeteries can cover large areas, so wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on grass and potentially uneven ground. Bring water, especially if visiting during warm weather. If you're visiting a family plot where multiple relatives are buried, you might want to bring flowers or small items to place on graves. Some cemeteries have restrictions on decorations, so you can ask the office about their policies.

Timing matters for cemetery visits. Visit during daylight hours when office staff are present and when you'll have good lighting for reading headstones and taking photographs. Weekday visits are often quieter than weekends. If you're unable to visit in person, some cemeteries offer photograph services where staff can take pictures of specific graves and email them to you.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting, obtain a cemetery map and write down the section and lot number. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and plan your visit during daytime hours when cemetery staff are available to answer questions.

Reading Headstones and Grave Markers

Once you've located the general area where a grave should be, reading the actual headstones and markers helps confirm you've found the correct burial. Headstones contain specific identifying information that connects the physical grave to the person being remembered. Learning to read and interpret these markers efficiently is valuable.

Most headstones display the deceased's full name, date of birth, and date of death. Many also include middle names or initials, maiden names (often in parentheses), and sometimes a brief inscription or epitaph. Compare this information carefully with what you know about the person you're seeking. Verify that names, dates, and any other details match what you expect to find.

Marker styles and materials vary considerably. Traditional upright monuments are common, but you'll also find flat ground-level markers, slanted markers, and decorative monuments with religious or symbolic imagery. Don't overlook flat markers when searching—they're easy to miss if you're only looking at upright headstones. Some graves have multiple markers placed by different family members at different times, so take time to examine the entire burial plot.

Age at death is sometimes recorded on headstones, helping confirm identity. For example, if you're looking for a person who died at age 82, a marker showing someone who died at age 35 is clearly not your target. Birth location, place of death, maiden names, and military service information sometimes appear on headstones, providing additional confirmation that you've found the correct grave.

Weather and age affect headstone legibility. Older stones can be difficult to read due to weathering, lichen growth, or erosion. If you have difficulty reading a stone, try different angles in relation to sunlight, or gently brush away debris. Never use harsh chemicals or pressure washers to clean stones, as this causes damage. Cemetery staff can sometimes help with reading illegible markers.

Practical takeaway: When you reach the area where the grave should be, systematically read headstones looking for name matches and dates that correspond with the person you're seeking. Check both upright and flat markers, and examine the entire plot area.

Using Technology and Online Resources

Modern technology offers several tools that can help locate graves without necessarily visiting in person, or to prepare before you visit. Online databases and mapping tools have made cemetery research more accessible than ever. Understanding what resources are available helps you plan your search strategy.

Many cemetery websites now include searchable databases. You can enter a name and search across their records. Some systems display results with lot numbers, section information, and even GPS coordinates. Sites like BillionGraves.com and FindAGrave.com aggregate burial information from thousands of cemeteries. These volunteer-maintained databases allow you to search by name and location. While not every cemetery is covered, these sites have surprisingly extensive coverage, particularly for older cemeteries.

Google Maps and similar mapping applications sometimes include cemetery locations and allow you to view satellite imagery of cemetery grounds. This can help you visualize the layout before visiting. Some cemeteries have also started adding GPS coordinates to their databases, which you can input into your phone's GPS to navigate directly to a specific lot.

Historical records housed in libraries and genealogy societies often contain cemetery information. Many public libraries offer free access to genealogy databases like Ancestry.com that include cemetery records and burial information. State historical societies frequently maintain archives of cemetery records, and county courthouses sometimes keep burial records as official documents.
