Understanding Your LG Washing Machine's Cleaning Cycle

Your LG washing machine contains several built-in programs designed to handle different types of fabrics and soil levels. The cleaning cycle works by combining water temperature, drum movement, and detergent to remove dirt, stains, and odors from clothing. LG machines typically offer between 10 and 15 different wash cycles, each tailored for specific purposes. The normal cycle runs for about 35 to 50 minutes on average, while heavy-duty cycles may take 60 minutes or longer. Understanding how these cycles function helps you choose the right settings for your laundry needs and extends the life of both your machine and your clothes.

Different cycle options serve different purposes. The delicate cycle uses slower drum speeds and cooler water to protect fragile fabrics like silk and lace. The heavy-duty cycle employs faster spinning and higher water temperatures to tackle heavily soiled work clothes or bedding. Many LG models include a quick wash cycle that completes in 15 to 30 minutes for lightly soiled items. The allergen cycle heats water to specific temperatures and uses extended rinses to remove common allergens. Understanding these options means you can make informed decisions about which cycle suits your laundry situation, rather than using the same setting for everything.

The drum itself plays an active role in cleaning. LG washing machines use either traditional drums with holes or their proprietary drum designs that create specific water jet patterns. As the drum rotates, it lifts clothes and drops them repeatedly into the water and detergent mixture. This mechanical action, combined with the chemical properties of detergent, is what removes soil from fabric fibers. Modern LG machines also include sensors that detect load size and fabric type, automatically adjusting water levels and cycle duration to match your specific load. Knowing this helps you recognize why certain settings produce better results than others.

Practical takeaway: Read your machine's manual to identify the specific cycles available on your model. Note which cycles your family uses most frequently and learn what each one does. This knowledge lets you select appropriate settings without guessing, which saves water, energy, and wear on your clothing over time.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Machine's Interior

Washing machines need regular cleaning because residue builds up inside over time. Detergent residue, fabric softener, dirt particles, and mineral deposits from hard water accumulate on the drum, rubber seals, and pump components. This buildup can cause odors, reduce cleaning performance, and potentially lead to mechanical problems. LG recommends running a cleaning cycle once a month for machines used multiple times per week, or once every two months for lighter use. The good news is that most LG machines have a dedicated cleaning cycle that handles this task without requiring you to purchase special products or disassemble anything.

To run a cleaning cycle on your LG washing machine, start with an empty drum—no clothes inside. Check your specific model's manual for the exact button combination, as different models have slightly different control interfaces. Some newer LG machines have a dedicated "TUB CLEAN" button on the control panel. Others require you to select a specific program through the dial or digital menu. Once you've selected the cleaning cycle, add either white vinegar (about two cups) or a commercial washing machine cleaner to the detergent dispenser. White vinegar is an affordable option that works well for routine monthly cleanings and costs roughly $2 to $4 per bottle. Commercial products designed for machine cleaning typically cost $8 to $15 per bottle but may be more effective for heavily soiled machines.

The cleaning cycle itself takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes to complete, depending on your model. During this cycle, the machine fills with hot water and runs an extended wash and rinse process designed to dislodge and flush away accumulated residue. The drum spins at various speeds to reach all interior surfaces. After the cycle finishes, you should allow the door to remain open for several hours so the interior dries completely. This prevents moisture from creating conditions where mold or mildew could begin growing again. Some people leave the door open overnight or for several hours during the day. If you notice any remaining odor after the cleaning cycle, running the cycle a second time often resolves the issue.

Pay special attention to the rubber door gasket—the flexible rubber seal around the door opening. This area traps moisture and becomes a common spot for mold growth. After you run your cleaning cycle, wipe down the gasket with a dry cloth, and periodically check it between cleanings. If you notice dark spots on the gasket, use a cloth dampened with white vinegar or a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water to wipe it clean. For tough mold or mildew, let the cleaning solution sit for 15 minutes before wiping. The detergent dispenser drawer also needs occasional attention—remove it and rinse it under running water to clear out dried detergent and mineral deposits.

Practical takeaway: Mark your calendar to run a cleaning cycle monthly. Keep white vinegar or machine cleaner on hand so you're never without supplies when it's time to clean. Spend five minutes wiping the door gasket and dispenser drawer each time you clean the machine to prevent buildup that's harder to remove later.

Choosing the Right Detergent and Water Temperature

The type of detergent you use significantly impacts both how clean your clothes get and how much residue stays in your machine. High-efficiency (HE) detergents are specifically formulated for modern washing machines that use less water than traditional machines. LG machines are high-efficiency models, which means they're designed to work best with HE detergent. Using regular detergent in an HE machine creates excessive suds that don't rinse away completely, leaving film on your clothes and buildup in the machine. HE detergents cost about the same as regular detergent but are more concentrated, so you use roughly half as much per load. A typical bottle of HE detergent costs $4 to $12 and lasts for 32 to 64 loads depending on the product and your load size.

Water temperature affects both cleaning power and energy costs. Hot water (around 130 degrees Fahrenheit) works best for heavily soiled items, whites that need brightening, and sanitizing purposes. Warm water (around 90 degrees Fahrenheit) handles moderately soiled items and works well for most everyday laundry. Cold water (below 60 degrees Fahrenheit) is energy-efficient and suitable for lightly soiled clothes, colors that might fade, and delicate items. Modern detergents are increasingly formulated to work effectively in cold water, which means you can often save energy without sacrificing cleaning power. Using cold water instead of hot water can reduce your washing machine's energy consumption by up to 80 percent per load, which adds up significantly over a year.

Hard water—water that contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium—can interfere with detergent performance. In areas with hard water, detergent doesn't dissolve as effectively, meaning clothes don't get as clean and residue builds up faster in the machine. You can test your water hardness with inexpensive test strips available at hardware stores for $5 to $10. If you have hard water, you might need to use slightly more detergent or consider installing a water softener. Some newer LG machines have built-in water softening features or sensors that detect water hardness and adjust automatically. Using the right amount of detergent matters too—more isn't better. Most people use twice as much detergent as they actually need, which creates residue buildup, increases machine wear, and wastes money.

Liquid detergents, powders, and pods each have different characteristics. Liquid detergent dissolves quickly and works well in cold water, but tends to create more suds and leave more residue. Powder detergent is often less expensive and works particularly well in hot water, though it can leave white residue on dark clothes if not fully dissolved. Pods (single-use capsules) provide consistent dosing and reduce over-usage, but cost more per load—typically 50 to 100 percent more than liquid or powder—and can occasionally fail to dissolve completely in cold water. The best choice depends on your water temperature preferences, water type, and budget.

Practical takeaway: Switch to HE detergent if you haven't already, and use the amount recommended on the bottle rather than guessing. If you have hard water, consider a water softener product or try using hot water for one wash cycle to see if it improves results. Track which
