Free Guide to Disputing Equifax Credit Report Errors

Understanding Credit Report Errors and Your Rights

A credit report contains detailed financial information about you, including your payment history, current debts, and public records like bankruptcy filings. Equifax is one of three major credit reporting agencies that collect and maintain this information. According to the Federal Trade Commission, about one in five consumers discovered an error on at least one of their three credit reports when they checked them.

Credit report errors are more common than many people realize. These mistakes can range from minor inaccuracies like a misspelled name to serious issues such as accounts that don't belong to you, incorrect payment statuses, or fraudulent accounts opened in your name. A single error could impact your credit score, which lenders use to make decisions about loans, credit cards, and even insurance rates.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you specific rights when it comes to your credit report. You have the right to know what information is in your report, the right to dispute inaccurate information, and the right to have errors corrected or removed. Equifax is legally required to investigate disputes within a reasonable timeframe and cannot ignore your request.

Understanding what counts as an error is the first step. Common errors include accounts listed twice, accounts belonging to someone else mixed into your report, incorrect payment dates or amounts, closed accounts shown as open, incorrect balances or credit limits, and duplicate negative marks for the same incident. Even small errors can affect your financial standing.

You can check your credit report for free once per year through AnnualCreditReport.com, the only government-authorized website for this purpose. This site is not a lending service and does not require payment. Taking time to review your report carefully is the first action you should take if you suspect errors.

Practical Takeaway: Review your Equifax credit report at least once a year and look for any accounts you don't recognize, incorrect payment histories, or personal information that doesn't match your records. Write down any errors you find with specific details like account numbers, dates, and the incorrect information listed.

Step-by-Step Process for Disputing Errors with Equifax

Disputing an error with Equifax involves a formal process outlined by federal law. The company must investigate disputes within 30 days of receiving your written request. The process is straightforward and does not require paying any fees or using a third-party service.

The first step is preparing your dispute letter. This should be a written communication sent by mail or through Equifax's online dispute portal. Your letter should include your name, address, phone number, and date of birth so Equifax can locate your report. Clearly identify each disputed item by account number or other identifying information. Explain what you believe is wrong with the information and why you think it's inaccurate. For example, you might write: "I dispute the account ending in 1234. This account shows a late payment in March 2022, but my records show I made the payment on time."

Include copies of any supporting documents that back up your claim. This might include bank statements showing you made a payment, a receipt from paying off a debt, a utility bill showing your current address if personal information is wrong, or a police report if someone opened an account fraudulently in your name. Do not send original documents—always keep originals for yourself.

You have several options for submitting your dispute to Equifax. You can mail your dispute letter to their dispute department, file a dispute through their website at Equifax.com, or call their dispute phone line. If you mail your dispute, send it to: Equifax Dispute Department, P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241. If you use the mail option, send your letter via certified mail with return receipt requested. This creates a paper trail proving when Equifax received your dispute.

After Equifax receives your dispute, they must contact the company that reported the information (called the "furnisher") and ask them to verify the accuracy of the disputed account. The furnisher must then investigate. If the furnisher cannot verify the information is correct, it must be removed from your report. Equifax must send you the results of the investigation, usually within 30-45 days of receiving your dispute.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your dispute letter clear and focused. Include one paragraph per disputed item, state exactly what is wrong, and attach supporting documents. Make copies of everything you send, and use certified mail if mailing your dispute so you have proof of delivery.

Using Equifax's Online Dispute Portal and Other Contact Methods

Equifax provides an online dispute portal that allows you to file disputes from your computer or phone without mailing anything. To access the portal, visit Equifax.com and look for the "Dispute" or "Report an Error" section. You will need to enter personal information to locate your report, which may include your Social Security number, date of birth, and current address.

The online portal walks you through the dispute process with a series of questions. You select which account or information you want to dispute, indicate what is wrong with it, and provide an explanation. The portal allows you to upload documents as evidence. Many people find the online method faster and more convenient than mailing, since you get immediate confirmation that Equifax received your dispute.

However, some people prefer the mailed letter method because it creates a clearer record. A certified letter with return receipt shows exactly when Equifax received your dispute, which matters if you later need to prove you submitted a dispute within a certain timeframe. The mailed method also keeps a paper trail if you need to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) later.

You can also dispute by phone. Equifax's dispute phone line is 1-888-548-7878. Call this number and follow the prompts to file a dispute over the phone. A representative will ask you questions about the error and take down your information. If you go this route, write down the date and time you called, the representative's name if provided, and a summary of what you discussed. Ask the representative to confirm that your dispute was received and get a reference number.

Regardless of which method you choose, Equifax must treat your dispute the same way legally. They have 30 days to investigate and respond. The advantage of online or phone filing is speed and convenience. The advantage of mailed letters is the paper trail. You can also file multiple disputes using different methods if you have many errors.

Practical Takeaway: Choose the dispute method that works best for your situation. For single errors, the online portal or phone line may be quickest. For multiple disputes or if you want a clear paper trail, send a certified letter. Keep detailed records of whichever method you use, including dates, reference numbers, and names of representatives you spoke with.

What Happens During Equifax's Investigation

Once Equifax receives your dispute, they launch an investigation. The company must contact the organization that reported the information to your credit report and ask them to verify it is accurate. This organization is called the "data furnisher." For example, if you dispute a late payment from a credit card company, Equifax contacts that credit card company.

The furnisher has a specific timeframe to respond to Equifax's inquiry. They must either confirm that the information is correct or tell Equifax they cannot verify it. If the furnisher cannot provide evidence that the information is accurate, Equifax must remove it from your report. This is a key protection under the FCRA—companies cannot keep reporting information they cannot verify.

Federal law requires Equifax to complete this investigation within 30 days of receiving your dispute, though in practice investigations can take 30-45 days. During this time, you may not see any changes to your report. You will not know the status of your dispute unless you contact Equifax directly using the reference number you received when you filed.

When the investigation concludes, Equifax must send you written results. This notice will tell you whether the disputed information was verified, removed, or modified. If Equifax removes the information, they will send you an updated copy of your credit report showing the correction. If they verify the information is correct, the notice will explain why.

You have the right to add a statement to your credit report if you disagree with the investigation results. This is called a "consumer statement" or "statement of dispute." Equifax must include this statement with your report when it is provided to lenders. Your statement should be brief—100 words or
