Free Guide to Data Center Builders and Operators

Understanding Data Center Infrastructure and Operations

Data centers are large facilities that house computer servers, storage systems, and networking equipment. These facilities operate around the clock to store, process, and deliver digital information. A data center builder constructs or expands these facilities, while operators manage the day-to-day functioning of equipment and systems.

The data center industry has grown significantly. According to industry reports, the global data center market reached approximately $196 billion in 2022 and continues expanding. Companies like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud operate some of the largest data center networks worldwide. However, smaller regional operators also serve specific geographic areas or industries.

Data centers require substantial infrastructure including power systems, cooling equipment, security measures, and redundant networks. A typical facility might contain thousands of server racks, each holding multiple computers. These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity—a single large data center can use as much power as a small city.

Building a data center involves several phases: site selection, design, construction, equipment installation, and testing. Operators then manage power distribution, temperature control, security, network connectivity, and equipment maintenance. The work requires coordination between architects, engineers, technicians, and facility managers.

Practical takeaway: Understanding the physical and operational components of data centers helps clarify what builders and operators actually do and the complexity involved in providing computing infrastructure.

Site Selection and Location Considerations

Choosing where to build a data center is one of the most critical decisions for any builder. Location affects operational costs, performance, and long-term viability. Several factors influence site selection decisions.

Proximity to power sources matters tremendously. Data centers consume massive amounts of electricity. A 50-megawatt facility might cost $100 million annually just for power. Builders often look for locations near hydroelectric dams, nuclear plants, or areas with competitive electricity rates. Iceland and parts of Scandinavia attract data center builders because geothermal and hydroelectric power provides abundant, inexpensive energy.

Cooling requirements drive site selection. Data center equipment generates extreme heat. Operators need either natural cooling (cold climate regions), water access for cooling systems, or substantial investment in mechanical cooling. Dublin, Ireland and parts of Sweden have become major data center hubs partly because cooler climates reduce cooling expenses.

Network connectivity is essential. Data centers need multiple high-speed fiber optic connections to internet backbones. Proximity to major metropolitan areas, internet exchanges, and existing network infrastructure reduces connectivity costs and latency. A data center in a rural area with excellent power but poor network connections would be practically unusable.

Other location considerations include:

• Real estate costs and land availability
• Zoning regulations and local government support
• Natural disaster risks (earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes)
• Labor availability for operations and maintenance
• Climate conditions affecting cooling needs
• Proximity to customer base or strategic markets
• Tax incentives offered by local governments

Practical takeaway: Data center locations are not random—builders evaluate multiple factors where power cost, cooling capability, and network access are typically the most important criteria.

Physical Infrastructure and Building Components

Data centers require specialized physical infrastructure unlike typical office buildings. The structures themselves must meet demanding requirements for durability, safety, and environmental control.

The building envelope must maintain temperature and humidity within strict ranges. Server equipment operates optimally between 59-89 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity levels should remain between 20-80 percent. Building design includes insulated walls, specialized HVAC systems, and environmental monitoring throughout the facility.

Power infrastructure is extraordinarily complex. Facilities require multiple independent connections to electrical grids to ensure redundancy. Internal distribution systems include backup generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and sophisticated monitoring equipment. A large data center might have 20+ megawatts of installed power capacity. The facility also includes voltage regulation equipment and power conditioning systems to protect sensitive electronics.

Cooling systems are among the most expensive components. Traditional computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units cool specific areas. More advanced facilities use hot/cold aisle containment, where hot air from equipment is separated from cool air supply. Some newer facilities use immersion cooling, where equipment is partially submerged in special fluids that transfer heat more efficiently than air. Facebook's data center in Luleå, Sweden uses seawater for cooling, dramatically reducing energy consumption.

Security infrastructure protects valuable equipment and data. Physical security includes reinforced concrete walls, limited entry points, badge access systems, surveillance cameras, and security personnel. Biometric scanners may control access to server rooms. Perimeter fencing and gates protect the facility grounds.

Networking infrastructure includes fiber optic cables, patch panels, switches, and routers. These components connect servers to internet backbones and to each other. Modern data centers often include multiple network paths to prevent single points of failure.

Practical takeaway: Data center buildings are highly specialized structures where power, cooling, security, and networking infrastructure is as important as the building itself.

Equipment, Server Technology, and Maintenance

Data centers house thousands of individual servers arranged in racks. Modern server technology has evolved substantially to meet data center requirements. Understanding equipment helps explain operational challenges and costs.

Servers in data centers differ from desktop computers. They typically have multiple processors, large amounts of memory, and storage capacity. A single server might cost $3,000-$15,000 depending on specifications. Large facilities contain thousands of these devices, representing millions in equipment investment.

Storage systems are separate from compute servers. Data centers use storage area networks (SANs), network-attached storage (NAS), or direct-attached storage. Some facilities dedicate entire sections to storage arrays containing petabytes of data (a petabyte equals one million gigabytes). Organizations like Netflix and Amazon maintain massive storage systems to serve content to global audiences.

Operators perform continuous maintenance. Hard drives fail—typically 2-5 percent annually. Memory modules occasionally malfunction. Network interface cards need replacement. Backup and replacement equipment is always on hand. Technicians work in shifts to replace failed components rapidly, often within minutes to minimize service disruption.

Modern facilities increasingly use modular designs where equipment modules can be added or removed as needs change. Some companies use containerized data centers—entire computing environments housed in shipping containers that can be transported and deployed rapidly.

Equipment monitoring systems track temperature, power consumption, network traffic, and component health. Alerts notify operators of problems immediately. Sophisticated software predicts failures based on performance trends, allowing preventive maintenance before equipment breaks.

Lifecycle management is important. Servers typically operate 4-6 years before becoming outdated. Operators must plan equipment replacement cycles, handle disposal of old hardware, and manage the constant flux of technology upgrades.

Practical takeaway: Data center operations involve managing complex, expensive equipment that requires constant monitoring, maintenance, and replacement planning.

Energy Consumption, Efficiency, and Environmental Impact

Data centers are among the largest energy consumers in modern economies. The industry faces increasing pressure to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Understanding these challenges is important for anyone interested in how data centers operate.

Global data center electricity consumption is substantial. According to various estimates, data centers consume 1-3 percent of worldwide electricity. A single large facility can consume 50-100+ megawatts. To put this in perspective, a 50-megawatt facility uses as much power as 40,000 homes.

Energy costs typically represent the largest operational expense for data center operators. A facility spending $1 million annually on power is common; large facilities may spend $10-50 million yearly on electricity alone. This makes energy efficiency not just an environmental concern but a business priority.

Power usage effectiveness (PUE) is a standard metric. PUE measures total facility power divided by IT equipment power. A PUE of 1.67 means that for every unit of power used by servers, 0.67 units go to cooling, lighting, and other overhead. Leading facilities achieve PUE ratios of 1.2-1.3, while older facilities might be 2.0 or higher. Reducing PUE from 2.0 to 1.
